The Gray Wolf is the largest member of the dog family. They are distributed throughout parts of North America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Most Wolves live in packs which can be between 7-20 individuals, depending on the habitat they are in. Their prey usually consists of deer, moose and caribou but they will sometimes prey on livestock and small mammals too.
The Timber Wolf (C.l. lycaon) was once the most widespread of the wolves in North America, but it is now restricted to certain areas.
The Great Plains Wolf (C.l. nubilus) also known as the Buffalo Wolf is now extinct in the wild. They used to follow the great herds of bison across North America.

The Great American Wolf
|
Author: Bruce Hampton |
For over three hundred years, the wolf was North America's most hated and reviled animal, relentlessly persecuted to the point of extinction by the mid-twentieth century throughout most of Mexico, the continental United States, and southern Canada. Then, in a matter of several decades, both public and scientific opinion reversed itself. The wolf became not only tolerated, but greatly desired as an integral member of ecosystems by conservationists and biologists who sought to return the predator to portions of its former range. What followed was one of the longest and most bitterly-fought conservation battles in history, one that continues today. - The Author
