Baby Giraffe ...

In August Whipsnade's latest arrival, a female giraffe calf, started life with a bump. Giraffes give birth standing up, so on entering the World the youngster had to withstand a 2m drop to the floor. Far from being harmful, this sudden jolt is thought to stimulate the calf to breathe. Baby giraffes can stand up within a few hours of being born which is no mean feat considering that they have four wobbly legs to control.

The young giraffe is currently spending time in her indoor home with Mum, Ellie. Although still prone to the occasional wobble, she is making good progress and will soon be exploring the outside paddock.

Ellie was born in Holland, and went to Whipsnade in 1988. This is her second calf.
