Courtesy of West Midlands Safari ParkWest Midland Safari and Leisure Park are proud to announce the birth of an extra special baby.Having waited almost 30 years, but never giving up, their dream came true when a precious baby male white rhinoceros was born on 1st March 2001 to eight year old first time mother, Tootsie.

The baby, who is yet to be formally named, weighed in at 150 lbs and entered the world totally oblivious of the turmoil being caused all around him, by the foot and mouth epidemic.

Mother and baby are doing exceptionally well and father, 10 year old Sharka, is never too far away.Tootsie's 18 month pregnancy was diagnosed with the help of the Zoological Society of London, which involved measuring hormone levels in her dung that is 95% accurate.

This new technique of testing samples no bigger than an eggcup full, was almost abandoned by the Zoological Society until West Midland Safari Park asked for their assistance to continue with the project, which they did.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park currently have five adult white Rhinoceros at the Park and the hope that one day another baby Rhino might be born, is now looking much brighter.
