Zebras are members of the Equidae family which also includes horses and asses. Their distinctive markings make it easy to identify and it was once known to the Romans as a “Tiger Horse”. Just like a human’s finger prints, no two zebras have the same stripe pattern.
They live in the open plains grasslands and mountains and are highly sociable animals, usually living in herds of 100 or more, aswell as with other antelopes such as the wildebeest. In the chance of a lion attacing, zebras collect together possibly confusing the predator. Keeping together with herds of other animals also aids to their protection.
They are primarily grazers and are dependant on water.
There are 3 species of Zebra living today. The Burchell’s (or Plains Zebra) is the most common living in open plains and grasslands. The Grevy’s Zebra is the largest and has finer, more distinct stripes. It is considered as endangered as a result of hunting. And the Mountain Zebra which is also considered as being in danger of possible extinction.
